Service and sacrifice
Jesus said: “You know that the rulers of the gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you, but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave, just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many” (Matt. 20.25-28; cf. Mk. 10.42-45).
Humility
St. Paul encourages the Christians at Philippi to model themselves on Jesus: "Let each of you look not to your own interests but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, assuming human likeness. And being found in appearance as a human, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death — even death on a cross" (Phil. 2.4-8).
Visionary
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus sets out his vision of what it means to live as a member of God's Kingdom (Matt. 5.1-7.29) and continues to build on this through his use of parables.
Animator
Jesus calls individuals to be his disciples and they respond immediately (Matt. 4.18-25, 9.9-13). He heals people who are sick ( e.g. Matt. 8.1-17; Mk. 1.21-27; Lk. 7.11-17), raises the dead (Jn. 11.1-45) and throws dishonest money-changers out of the Jerusalem temple (Jn. 2.13-16).
Strategist
Jesus indicates to his followers what will be the final stages of his life's work (Matt. 16.21).
