that draws on the idea of servanthood can have negative connotations in today's world, being linked with slavery, servitude, indentured or bonded labour, exploitation and abuse. These practices are inhumane and evil and not at all what Jesus means when he talks about service. For him, serving others is the highest form of work anyone can do. It's not something he's forced into but a matter of free-will, a deliberate choice to assume this role. It's another example of him turning secular values and expectations on their heads.

by taking the position of a servant requires humility and a concern for others. The servant leader embodies all the 5Ls and sees them as complimentary. Servant leaders draw the threads together and find ways to make them manifest in their work situations, through service. This will involve using attributes such as strategic thinking, education, and building partnerships, all of which Jesus exemplified. By looking out for, expressing, encouraging and nurturing the 5Ls, a group can be transformed into a community. The 5Ls feed each other and only when they are all present is the deepest meaning of community revealed.

can take place outside formal leadership roles. Being a servant leader doesn't depend on status or seniority. A servant leader can exercise leadership and/or have an influence on a group of people just by having a vision of what's needed to become a community and the will to try and make that vision a reality.
