Leadership:
What does
it mean?
Leadership:
-
can mean different things to different people. Individuals may have differing expectations of their leaders and respond better to one style of leadership over another.
-
is fundamentally about influencing others to follow. It has nothing to do with seniority or expertise.
-
'style' describes a leader's approach, which will be shaped by a variety of factors, including personality, values, skills, attributes and experiences. A leader's style can be categorised by the degree of control the leader exerts over their team. This determines where they sit on the leadership spectrum, which ranges from autocratic (strict authority) at one extreme, through democratic (consultative, collaborative), to laissez faire (hands off, delegative) at the other.
-
styles all have pros and cons depending on the leader, the situation and the team members. Leaders will have a preferred style of leadership but more accomplished leaders will be able to adapt the way they work with others to achieve goals (personal, organisational, or Kingdom) according to circumstances.
-
has a real bearing on how people feel at work. Good leaders enable all members of their teams to feel engaged, valued and empowered. Bad leaders make people feel demotivated, disenfranchised and unappreciated.
-
isn't something Jesus explicitly talks much about but he demonstrates a very specific style of leadership that informs this approach to building a sense of community at work. Jesus sees the role of leader being to serve and transform the people he works with into a community. Rather than imposing his will, he seeks to encourage others to join him on the journey and be part of the change process.
