Why Work Matters

Work is important. The majority of us spend most of our lives working in one way or another, whether we are employed, self-employed, volunteering, providing care, or doing household chores. Some work brings recognition and reward to those who do it; other workers, even though they are key to the functioning of society, are undervalued and taken for granted by those they serve. The point is that work means a lot more to us than simply whether its paid or unpaid. It can be a source of enjoyment, fulfilment and friendship but also of pressure, stress and isolation. As the world of work continues to evolve, it is imperative that we understand how the work we do, the way we go about it, and the kind of behaviour we encounter in others, affects our own wholeness and wellbeing as well as that of our communities.
